When we decided to do weekly lunchtime readings I thought how it would happen was that people would come, listen to the reading and then leave but something interesting has started to happen.
During the reading everyone (including the reader) goes into a type of revelry and then when the reading is over we all take a deep breath and start having discussing what we have just heard. The conversation seems to take longer than the reading and it is really illuminating. This has the unexpected result of making the experience deeper and is really enjoyable.
As the person who will be doing the bulk of the reading I was a little apprehensive but Janet Frame’s writing is so lyrical I just loose my performance anxiety and enjoy the writing.
